Tea and The Dawn of History

Here’s yet another blog where I combine tea and history and travel, albeit with quite a misleading title.

From this photo, taken from our hotel window this morning, you might assume we are somewhere tropical.

Not so.

We are in Kingscote, because both Lady Devotea and I have been commissioned to write articles for upcoming editions of Fleurieu Living Magazine.

We live at one end of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and Kangaroo Island is the other.

South Australia was officially proclaimed in Adelaide in December, 1836, but that was actually the second attempt. The First European settlement in this state was just here, a short walk north of where I am now, about five months earlier.

It turned out to be a bad idea, as there is not enough fresh water here; and the whole thing went pear-shaped.

These days, Kangaroo Island thrives on tourism and excellent agriculture and local produce. The Ligurian Bee honey; produced by a colony of bees introduced from Italy in the 19th century and disease-free (unlike most of the bees in Europe) is amazing and perfect in a cup of Aussie Ginger Chai. Even when made using primitive equipment in a hotel room.

So, we are over here for three days, zipping hither and thither.

And in what are we zipping hither and thither?
The Devoteamobile, of course.Over the next few days, we’ll decide who we think would best represent us to the good citizens on Kangaroo Island, and have a chat with them.

We’d love to have an outlet on KI, but only one. There is at least one place that sells loose leaf tea here so, far, but let’s see what the next two days brings.

After all, we want somewhere special.

  1. Special is as special does and your tea is truly special. Good luck in your search hoping all goes well with the article and the leaves.

  2. Good luck with everything, let us know how it went. Whatever happens the view out of your hotel window is lovely. And your car is iconic!
PS: Doesn’t sound too bad writing for a “glossy lifestyle magazine.” What kind of lifestyles will you be exploring for their readership?
