THE PREQUEL:
I was all a-tinker,
In my super secret lab,
Whilst Lady D was tasting tea,
And rating it as “fab”.
Whilst blending nice new teas
Are the purpose of the site
Often times we try our hand
At putting other things to rights
The transference of people
From comfy point-to-point
Cold nuclear fission
Or teaching dancing cats ‘en pointe’
Ending war and famine
And cleaning up the air
Can we help the whole world learn
To love, to laugh to care?
Can we take away the anguish
And the greed and the spite?
Is there a universal way
To make everything all right?
I’d like to say we can
What an achievement that would be
But we’ve only had one result
A fantastic cup of tea.
A little spice, a little rose
Lemongrass, Chun Mee
Some rare exotic herbs
And some black and silky tea
Some ginger and some cinnamon
Cardamom and Sow Mei
Some vanilla pods, some cornflowers
A little myrtle, by the way
Every day our large black trays
Are heaped with nature’s best
We shake and stir and stir again
In our endless blending quest
Will this tea cure baldness?
Or this one leprosy?
Will this tea clear the world of evil?
Or help the blind to see?
It’s got anti-oxidants, they say
Though they’re too small to see
But they can add a million to our bottom line
If we market it with glee
But we’d rather not make such claims
About our humble cuppa
We’d rather just ensure you enjoy it
With breakfast, lunch and supper
So with the festive season on us
Yes, it’s really here
We decided upon this
A new calendar to end the year:
ADVENTUS CAMELLIA SINENSIS
Boxing day is always made
Of full bellied leisure
So find yourself a warm Chun Mee
And look upon your treasure
The twenty-seventh often finds
A listless ennui
So brew yourself a strong Assam
And watch the world go by
The twenty-eighth! It’s time to move
Get working ’round the place
Sipping on a Lover’s Leap
While picking up the pace
You can’t believe the twenty-ninth
Has turned up once again
A Phoenix Oolong starts the day
And left us feeling Zen
It’s just one day to New Year’s Eve
There’s plenty left to do
So here we go; Yunnan in hand
(plus a biscuit, or two)
And now the day that ends the year
So break out that Darjeeling
And drink your resolutions’ health
With strength, energy and feeling
When New Year’s Day dawns bright and clear
Take a moment to yourself
Find whatever tea sings to you
Select it from your shelf
Pour the liquor; lift the cup
Breathe in the tannic waft
Rasie your cup to yourself
Hold your dreams aloft.
Sinterklaas-evening brings out the poet in everyone. 🙂
@bram I don’t know why but for me Zwarte Piet is better suited for @thedevotea
@xavier I agree that @thedevotea would make a splendid Zwarte Piet. But then again he would throw tea instead of pepernoten.
Who is Zwarte Piet? Black Pete? Is that what that that means? Robert your poem is lovely, I only just saw this because we had a lot of (very nice) things going on at home but it really made me smile. Thank you.
Zwarte pieten are the helpers of Sinterklaas. They do the dirty work of going through the chimney (black) and deliver presents into the shoes.
@jopj– I know you’ll love this since you write tea poetry too.
