As I write this, the story is breaking of a deadly quake in India and Nepal.
People have died in Nepal, Darjeeling and Sikkim according to reports.
It made me think about the people who pick the tea I drink.
Surely they count for something? Sikkim isn’t even in my spellchecker!
If 15 people died in a quake in London or Rome, New York or Sydney, it would be the top story. But instead, it will quietly fade from the papers within a few hours.
Today at least, as you slurp your Sikkim, your Margaret’s Hope or Harmutty, your Maloom or Meghma, spare a thought for those who make it possible.
Thank you for this. Off to see what more information I can find. We must take care of our tea community — from seed to cup.
I saw this update after I saw updates from our Darjeeling tea folk. I hope Sikkim recovers. I wish the people well. And, by extension, I wish Temi well.
